Yesterday, a funny/cool/coincidental thing happened: Crystal Cattle and I blogged about the same topic but used different sources to deliver the same message. How cool is social media?
Anyway, Crystal featured a quote on farm animals not being pets by one of my all-time favorite artists, Miranda Lambert. I won't repeat Crystal's words but encourage you to go check out what she and Miranda had to say about cows, pets and the circle of life.
Miranda Lambert: Some animals you feed and some that feed you.
I thought it was planned! So funny (insert great minds quote) - love it!
ReplyDeleteWant to know what the difference is between a food animal and a pet? Culture. That's it.
ReplyDeleteAll of the animals we see as pet in the western european (and dirivative) cultures, are food animals in other human cultures around the world. Some animals we see as food are either seen as inedible or as animals that a given culture may have a prohibition on eating.
Just because we, in out culture, have a cultural prohibition (taboo) against eating dogs and cats, doesn't mean that they can't be food. And, just because most of us (myself included) eat cattle, hogs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, turkeys, etc. doesn't mean that someone can't keep those animals as pets.
So I think that the whole premise that some animals are pets and some are food is kind of absurd if seen as an overall paradigm. It's all relative.
Desta - no it wasn't planned but I thought it was an entertaining coincidence.
ReplyDeleteJoanne - yes you are right, perspective and relativity are important to consider in any situation. Thanks for your input and commentary.
